A privacy inspector for macOS

See what your
apps can do

Privacy permissions, extensions, and background items for every app, in one window. Each state shows where it came from.

macOS 15 Sequoia or later · Free and open source

Read-only by design. The only change it makes is a permission reset you confirm.

Every permission, explained

Camera, microphone, screen recording, Full Disk Access, automation and more, read from macOS’s own privacy databases. Open any state to see the record it came from.

What runs in the background

App and system extensions, login items, launch agents and daemons, each matched to its app, with its Login Items approval.

Clean up what’s left behind

Deleted apps can keep their permissions. System Settings hides those entries; App Inspector finds them and resets them.

No guessing

Unknown is never shown as “off”

Allowed

Confirmed from a macOS record

Not requested

The record was read, and there’s no entry

Unknown

Couldn’t be read, so App Inspector says why instead of guessing

Getting started

Set up App Inspector in four steps

App Inspector needs one permission to read macOS’s privacy and background-item databases. Nothing it reads leaves your Mac.

01Install App Inspector

Get the latest release from GitHub Releases. Drag App Inspector to Applications and open it.

02Allow Full Disk Access

macOS protects the databases that hold permissions and background-item approvals. Click Open Settings in App Inspector, turn on App Inspector under Full Disk Access, and reopen the app. Without it, those states show as Unknown.

03Find what needs attention

Pick an app in the sidebar. Filter by Has grants, Needs attention, Has unknowns, or New since last scan. The list refreshes as apps are installed or removed.

04Reset leftover permissions

Choose Leftover permissions → Show Apps That Are Not Installed, then reset one entry or all of them. Entries in the system database need your administrator password; macOS asks only if there are any.
